Black History Month 2022: “What Black History Month Means to Me”
A note from Yolunda Haynes on “What Black History Month Means to Me”
Dec 12, 2024
The day starts as usual. I arrive at 10 am to an already bustling hotel. Upon arrival, I stop in to say good morning to our director of housekeeping, Veronica. We agree to meet later in the day to go over upcoming room requirements for our flight crew.
I head to the back office and say hello to the guest services team along the way. Upon arriving at my desk, I check in with our group reservations coordinator, Hunter. We share office space, which works out great as we frequently work together on group business.
Soon, it’s time for our weekly revenue call. I dial in, and for the next hour, our DORM, Nate, leads a discussion with hotel leaders about the current state of hotel revenue. We discuss upcoming strategy and take some time to go over suggestions for new booking packages.
Next, the highlight of the day arrives, as the team gathers for our quarterly team member meeting. The team member & manager of the quarter are announced, and we enjoy a great meal served by our banquets team. Then, leaders from the sales, marketing, and revenue teams give brief updates on current hotel happenings, goals, and achievements. I present the update for the revenue department and thank the team for a job well done on such a great quarter.
I stop into our Black Door Cafe for my daily iced chai and head back to my desk. I then assist the guest services team with a few reservations-related issues. We also discuss instructions on several new rate plans and troubleshoot a technical problem with our property management system.
I spend the next few hours working on some revenue projects with our DORM before meeting back up with Veronica to go over our crew manifest for the upcoming month. I then head back to my desk and review our latest STR report. I finish the day by writing my weekly commentary on this report, which I then send out to hotel leadership.
I shut down my workstation and head out, making one last stop to check in with the front desk team. I make my way home feeling accomplished and glad to be a part of my Mills House family.
