Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

Oct 05, 2024

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15. Established as a week-long celebration in 1968 by President Johnson and expanded to a month by President Reagan in 1988, it honors the contributions of Hispanics to the U.S. This period aligns with independence days for several Central American countries, starting on September 15, and includes Mexico’s independence on September 16, Chile’s on September 18, and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) on October 12. The month-long observance celebrates the rich histories and cultures of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, and Spanish-speaking nations across Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Paper Flower Crafting

Paper flowers have become an integral part of Mexican culture. They are commonly used to decorate alters for religious festivals like Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), as well as for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations. Today, the tradition of Mexican paper flower making continues to thrive. Artisans across the country are preserving this beautiful craft, passing their skills on to the next generation. As a testament to their enduring popularity, paper flowers have also gained recognition beyond Mexico, becoming a beloved decorative element in homes and business around the world.

Key West Historic Inns

Influential Areas

The Key West Historic Inns are located in an area with a heavily Hispanic community and culture. The Inns decided to implement some extra activities this month to recognize and appreciate Hispanic Culture!

To encourage language learning and cross-cultural communication, the team will be introduced to a Spanish Word or Phrase of the Day. This daily initiative aims to inspire staff to use the new words in their conversations and correspondence, promoting linguistic diversity and making communication more inclusive. Spanish-speaking staff members have expressed appreciation when others make an effort to speak their language, and this initiative will enhance those interactions, creating an environment of learning and mutual respect.

The Inns will also be hosting a Spanish Heritage Potluck, encouraging team members to bring in a dish that represents their favorite Hispanic cultural recipe. Whether it’s a family tradition or simply a favorite dish, this event will offer a chance for everyone to share in the flavors of Hispanic cuisine. In addition to food, the potluck will feature music, décor, and even opportunities to learn traditional dances like salsa, bachata, and merengue, offering a full cultural experience for all.

The Key West Inns will also take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the rich Hispanic history of the surrounding community. Our small island and the lower keys have a history deeply influenced by Spain, Cuba, and other Hispanic cultures, dating back hundreds of years. Local events celebrating this heritage will be shared with the team, and participation will be encouraged to further immerse everyone in the local history and culture.
